Scope

Scope of Services

We see paediatric patients up to the age of 18 years with congenital and acquired diseases involving the kidneys or urinary tracts. Common diseases include Single Kidneys, Cystic Kidneys, Glomerular Diseases (including Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis and Lupus), Renal Tubular Diseases, Urinary stones, Urinary Tract Infections, Vesicoureteral Reflux, Bedwetting and Hypertension. We look after patients with the early stages of kidney impairment, focusing on treatments to stop or slow down the progression of kidney disease.

Paediatric Chronic Kidney Disease Programme

In this programme, we provide long-term dialysis and perform renal transplantation for paediatric patients with renal failure. Through individualised therapy, we strive to integrate schooling and eventually employment into our treatment plans. We also provide centre-based chronic haemodialysis as well as home peritoneal dialysis. All new patients and/or caregivers are given in-depth one-to-one training by our team, who will perform home visits and provide follow-up support.

Our ultimate goal is to provide every child with a chance for a renal transplant, the best quality of life and long-term outcome. Kidney transplant was started since 2018 after returning from Singapore. My first live related renal transplant was performed in feb 2019. We individualise our immunosuppression regimes based on our patients' risk profiles and using specialised tests that assess immune function. We also have the facilities and expertise to detect patients at high risk of graft rejection and opportunistic infections at an early stage.

Patients seen in this clinic include those with incontinence or congenital structural abnormalities. We perform specialised tests like Urodynamics, Uroflowmetry and Magnetic Resonance Urogram to assess the urinary tracts.

Fetal Kidney Clinic For Expectant Parents

This clinic is for expectant parents who have been told that their unborn child may have significant abnormalities of the kidney and/or urinary tract based on prenatal ultrasound scans and would like to find out more about possible diagnosis, investigations, interventions and long-term outcomes after birth. The fetal anomaly scan at 18-24 weeks’ gestation should have been performed.

Follow-up scans in the later stages of the pregnancy may be advised by your obstetrician to evaluate the severity of the abnormalities. Your obstetrician can advise you regarding referral to this clinic.

What To Expect On Your First Appointment?

In order to facilitate a better understanding of your child’s condition, a comprehensive consultation inclusive of detailed history-taking and physical examination will be administered at the first visit. This process may take 30 to 45 minutes. Subsequent corresponding tests (blood, urine and/or imaging etc.) are then performed in order to enable our doctor to arrive at the appropriate diagnosis and/or determine the current status of any existing medical condition. A follow-up appointment will be arranged to discuss the results of the investigations and available therapeutic options. Our doctor will endeavour to address any concerns which the patient and his or her caregivers may have at any point during the consultation process.
